Council is doing its part to help the environment with the construction of a new charging station for electric vehicles in Leeton’s central business district.

Council’s Manager Environmental Sustainability Luke Tedesco said the installation of the station is a part of Council’s strong commitment to increasing environmental sustainability.

“This initiative was identified as a key action in Leeton Shire Council’s Energy Master Plan adopted by Council in late 2021,” said Mr Tedesco.

“It is expected that the installation of the new charger will help visitors and residents to reduce CO2 emissions by supporting the take up of electric vehicles as well as boost the local economy and tourism,” he said.

Councillor George Weston added, “Council welcomes the installation of the electric car charging infrastructure for our community and visitors which is a great step towards expanding the Shire’s environmental sustainability.”

Council has been fortunate to secure a free 3 phase car charger courtesy of Tesla Australia.

The car charger has been registered with Destination Charging Australia’s GPS mapping system which will further promote Leeton Shire as a destination of choice for electric vehicle owners.

“The electric car charger will enable an electric vehicle owner to identify Leeton as an appropriate destination to visit and charge their vehicle at a rate of 1km/minute,” said Mr Tedesco.

“This provides a good window for visitors and residents to explore our beautiful town, shop locally and enjoy our fantastic food outlets whilst their car is being charged.”

The vehicle charging station located at the Sycamore Street car park is now fully operational and open to the public.

Mr Tedesco added that installation of renewable energy sources across Council infrastructure is a key priority with more exciting initiatives being planned for the coming months.
