Leeton Shire Council is holding a free child restraint checking event at Leeton Market Plaza on Saturday 6 April 2024, from 9am to noon.

Parents and carers of young children are invited to come along to find out more about the child restraint laws and to have their child restraints checked for correct installation by an accredited fitter, Lanhams of Leeton, free of charge.

“While we have seen a significant increase in the number of well fitted restraints, there still appears to be a need for education in our community about the safe installation and use of child car seats, particularly for grandparents,” said Leeton Shire Council Road Safety Officer Steph Puntoriero.

“Unless a restraint is correctly fitted, it will not protect a child in the event of a crash or when a driver has to brake suddenly to avoid a collision.

“Parents and carers appear to understand that a child restraint must be correctly fitted to fulfil their legal responsibilities, but many do not have a correctly fitted child restraint in their vehicle. It is often the case that a simple clip can improve the safety of a child passenger,” she said.

Anyone wishing to have a child restraint checked or fitted should contact a Transport for NSW authorised restraint fitting station.
