Leeton Shire Council, after consulting the Roxy Redevelopment Committee, has decided to put up for sale via Expressions of Interest (EOI) the old upstairs ‘red’ Roxy seating; 200 seats in varying quality are available for sale. Council would like to give Leeton locals the first option to buy.

The red seats were sourced for the Roxy from the Hay Majestic Theatre in the 1990s, however, they date back as far as 1926 when they were first used in the Sydney St James Theatre before being moved to Hay in 1972.

The red seats no longer meet fire compliance regulations and are having to be replaced as part of the Roxy Community Theatre refurbishment. Fortunately, the remaining original Roxy brown seats do meet fire compliance and will most definitely be retained as important heritage pieces.

Described as ‘vintage treasures that have graced the Roxy for over three decades and are laden with fabulous memories from bygone eras’, the red seats would make interesting talking points in any Leeton home or business.

Roxy Redevelopment Committee Member, Judy Nolan, is encouraging the sale of the seats, saying, “the proceeds from the sale of these cherished old Roxy seats will come full circle, returning directly to benefit our beloved Roxy Community Theatre.”

“Every dollar raised will be reinvested into the Roxy Community Theatre, supporting its ongoing restoration – by locals for locals,” she said.

Note: We recommend displaying and filling in these forms on a computer rather than a mobile device or tablet.

  • Each EOI should indicate whether the applicant is seeking good quality (ready to use), fair quality (minor restoration required) or poor-quality seats (major restoration required), and how many seats of each category they are after and what they are willing to pay. Please note Council is obliged to charge GST.
  • Council will consider all reasonable offers. Council reserves the right to sell or not sell the seats at the conclusion of the EOI period and will negotiate revised sale prices with some applicants if necessary. All seats sold must be collected by successful buyers on 11 and 12 October at a pre-arranged time or the sale will lapse.
  • If there are still seats remaining at the end of the EOI period, Council will determine other avenues to dispose of the seats, including auction houses.
  • Photos of examples of good, fair and poor-quality seats can be found at the bottom of this web page (under 'Related Information').
  • EOIs close Monday, 9 October 2023, at midnight and need to be sent to Cynthia Arel (cynthiaa@leeton.nsw.gov.au) or by hand mail delivered to Leeton Council’s Main Office and marked for attention Cynthia Arel. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR NAME AND CONTACT DETAILS ARE CLEARLY STATED ON YOUR EOI.
