With Anzac Day approaching many people will be attending events across the region. Travellers are urged to pay attention to road closures in town centres where marches may be occurring.

The Leeton Dawn Service will commence 6am and the main service and march are scheduled for 9.45am. In addition, there will be services at Yanco Hall at 12 noon and in Whitton Park at 3pm.

Due to the Leeton main service and march, Kurrajong Avenue, Pine Avenue, Wade Avenue, Chelmsford Place and Church Street will be temporarily closed.

Roads are expected to be closed one hour before the start of both the dawn service and march and will re-open at the conclusion of the services.

The double demerit point period for the Anzac Day 2024 long weekend will run from midnight Thursday 24 April 2024 to midnight Sunday 28 April 2024.

Drivers travelling over the holiday period are asked by NSW Police and local councils to take care, plan their journeys and watch their speed. NSW Police said they have issued more speeding tickets this year during double demerit periods than in comparison to other years.

Council’s Road Safety Officer, Steph Puntoriero, said, “All vehicle drivers should take particular care over this period as double demerits will be in place.“

“Double demerits and increased fines may lead to a loss of licence but drivers should understand that there is no such thing as safe speeding.”

With the Anzac Day long weekend signalling the end of school holidays, drivers are being warned to expect high volumes of traffic on the roads with many people returning from holidays.

Mrs Puntoriero also reminded drivers, “No one plans to have a crash and if you  plan your journey you don’t need to speed.”
