About Cr Stephen Tynan
Elected to the Council in September 2024, Cr Stephen Tynan has a long-standing connection with Leeton. His first encounter with the town dates back to 1983 when his rugby league team from Canberra Hawker College played against Yanco Agricultural High School. Although his team was defeated, this experience left a lasting impression on him. In 2003, Cr Tynan returned to Leeton to accept a teaching position at St Francis College. Nearly 40 years after his memorable rugby league match, he now teaches science at Yanco Agricultural High School, in what he considers a full-circle moment.
Cr Tynan boasts an impressive academic background, holding a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science from Canberra College of Advanced Education, a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of New South Wales in Childhood Leukaemia Research, an MBA from the Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Science Teaching, a Doctor of Education in Educational Neuroscience from the University of New England, and a Graduate Diploma in Theology from the University of Newcastle. His career also includes international experience, having conducted scientific research in Ottawa, Canada.
In addition to his council responsibilities, Cr Tynan is actively involved in the community. He serves as a committee member of the Italian Catholic Committee and chairman of the Leeton Parish. His past roles include treasurer at Leeton Preschool for four years and treasurer/secretary of the Leeton Netball Association for two years. In 2023, he founded the Leeton Residents & Ratepayers Association and remains an active participant in its meetings.
Cr Tynan cherishes the quality of life and strong sense of community in Leeton. He states, “While living in our beautiful Shire allows you to be very involved in community events and initiatives, it’s also easy to shut the world out and enjoy some privacy.” In his spare time, he enjoys making vinegar, a hobby that has taught him patience and determination.
Throughout his term, Cr Tynan is committed to leading Council on a path of careful consideration for the future by increasing the quality of thought and responsible leadership and ensuring it is grounded in compassion for other people. He will also continue to advocate for better health outcomes for the community and the effective and efficient use of Council resources.
