The Formula 1.0 Grand Prix involves daily races around a set course of up to 500 kilometres to points throughout the Riverina. Gliders start together over the airfield, with the first glider to cross the finish line each day the winner. At the end of the week, the most successful pilot will be crowned champion.
In a world first, this grand prix-style competition has been designed to be accessible and fun with the rules placing a limit on high-performing aircraft. All aircraft entered into the competition are also handicapped depending on their performance to ensure a fair contest.
Competition Organiser Adam I’Anson said the Formula 1.0 competition was an exciting evolution for the sport of gliding. “This new Formula 1.0 competition gives all pilots a taste of grand prix racing - the most exhilarating type of gliding.”
“These gliders are capable of flying in excess of 250 kilometres per hour so with an even playing field and some great conditions in Leeton, we’re expecting some fast races with close and thrilling finishes over the airfield.
“This competition encapsulates what gliding is all about - safe, affordable and fun aviation.”
The Formula 1.0 Grand Prix competition will run from 28 December 2017 to 5 January 2018. More information on the competition and live tracking of pilots is available at www.f1gp.com.au.
