The much-anticipated upgrade works on the Whitton and Darlington Point Road Bridge have commenced.
This $3 million project is being funded by the NSW State Government and is also being partially funded by Leeton Shire Council, Murrumbidgee Irrigation and Transport for NSW.
Council’s Manager Special Projects Adrian Edgcome-Lucas said that the Whitton BS-1-111 Bridge Upgrade (Whitton & Darlington Point Road) is a PBS Level 3A rated bridge which will facilitate heavy freight traffic between Whitton and Darlington Point.
“Performance Base Standard (PBS) Level 3A is the newest rating of freight efficient heavy vehicles entering into Australia’s traffic population, similar in length and characteristics as a two-trailer road train. The works are being undertaken as the current bridge is not suitable for these higher rating vehicles and is showing signs of distress. Council is engaging in this work now to ensure the integrity of our Shire’s roads.”
Murray Constructions from Deniliquin are the major contractor delivering the civil project and it will be project managed by the Leeton Shire Council.
The upgrade works are expected to be completed by October 2020.
