Whitton and nearby residents will soon have access to an upgraded transfer station in Whitton which will provide a safer, environmentally friendly site for the disposal of additional domestic waste and recycled items.
Works under the ‘Whitton Transfer Project’ are well underway and are due for completion around August 2020.
“The key focus for development of the Whitton Transfer Station is to encourage waste to be safely disposed and to promote resource recovery wherever possible,” said Council’s Waste and Recycling Coordinator, Guy Retallick.
In designing the Whitton Transfer Station, Council took into consideration a number of key aspects such as ease of site access and use, the safety of workers and residents, and protection of the surrounding environment.
“Users will be able to access the site via a one-way travel lane from Naradhun Street to Loughnan Street. Council staff will supervise the site to monitor the quantity and types of wastes being generated and to prevent any cases of illegal dumping,” said Mr Retallick.
“Further, trees and shrubs will be planted around the site to serve as windbreaks and the roads will be sealed to reduce dust. There will be increased controls on stormwater runoff and all skip bins will have lids.”
Council plans to trial operating hours at the Whitton Transfer Station as follows:
Wednesday: 12:30pm to 4:30pm
Saturday: 8:30am to 12:30pm
The site will be locked after hours.
Council’s General Manager Jackie Kruger said Council is delighted to undertake this important development in Whitton.
“Improvements to Whitton’s waste collection point are set to benefit the township and surrounds as well as the environment through recycling and environmental protection measures in the site’s design,” said Mrs Kruger.
The Whitton Transfer Station Project is supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW Environmental Protection Authorities - Waste Less, Recycle More Incentive Program. More information on the project and the opening date will be available by Council in coming weeks.
