The level of safety protection measures required for the Gogeldrie Weir Access Road private driveway was discussed at Council’s September Meeting.
Leeton Shire Council resolved to install barriers and upgrade the existing warning signage and delineation of a Gogeldrie Weir Park private driveway to meet Australian standards including installing Chevron Alignment Markers.
Safety concerns on the sharp hairpin bend on the private access driveway into Gogeldrie Weir Park, which runs adjacent to the Sturt Canal on all sides, were first raised by elected members of the Gogeldrie Weir Recreational Facility Committee of Council. They proposed that a safety guard rail be installed.
After a comprehensive investigation of the curve by Council’s engineering staff, it was recommended that the existing signage could be further augmented to better comply with the current Australian Standards. This included installing Chevron Alignment Markers.
Mayor Maytom was strongly of the view that signage alone wasn’t enough to prevent a fatal accident and moved a motion to install guard rails as well. This was unanimously supported by the Council.
Funding for the upgraded signage and safety barrier (up to a total of $35K) will be sourced from Council’s Infrastructure Reserve.
