Coronavirus has impacted all our lives this year and
advice surrounding restrictions changes regularly.
In March New South Wales announced it was stopping stationary Random Breath Testing (RBT) and Mobile Drug Testing (MDT) and NSW Police confirmed they would stop major roadside operations during Coronavirus restrictions.
Some people thought this was an invitation to flout the law and drive while intoxicated or while under the influence of drugs – but they were wrong.
While stationary roadside testing may have been paused, NSW Roads Minister, Andrew Constance, has warned NSW Police will still be on our roads, and, if you drink or drug drive, the chance of getting caught is still very real.
"Highway Patrol are operating and will enforce the law. You will get caught if you drink drive," Mr Constance said.
Local Murrumbidgee Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Sergeant, Steve Mallam, said drink and drug driving has continued to be a priority.
“While stationary random testing may have temporarily ceased, we continue to remain focused on traffic enforcement strategies including random mobile RBT and MDT,” Sergeant Mallam said.
“People driving over the legal BCA limit in NSW, be it low range offence or their first time, may have their driver’s license suspended immediately by Police. Anyone who thinks the Police have gone indoors, away from the virus, think again. We will still be pulling over road users breaking the law in order to keep our roads safe”.
Look after your loved ones, yourself, and other road users by doing the right thing.
