Leeton Shire Council and Police in the Leeton local government area are asking drivers to use their fog lights correctly and avoid being fined as traffic numbers increase on our roads over the Christmas, New Year and school holiday period.
Sergeant Steve Mallam of the Murray Cluster Highway Patrol is asking drivers to be aware of using fog lights, with many drivers leaving their fog lights on in summer when there is no fog.
“It is an offence to drive with your fog lights switched on unnecessarily. A driver is only permitted to use fog lights if driving in fog, mist or other atmospheric conditions that restrict visibility. There have been a lot of drivers using their fog lights in summer conditions which can make it difficult for other drivers to see, which can lead to serious issues on our roads” said Sergeant Mallam.
“Fog lights are different to daytime running lights. Daytime running lights are designed to increase visibility of a vehicle to other road users in daylight conditions. Daytime running lights do not create unnecessary glare which using fog lights in normal conditions does” said Kym Snow Leeton Shire Council Road Safety Officer.
All drivers should be aware that fog lights must not be used as a substitute for daytime running lights. Fog lights are a nuisance and can dazzle or distract other drivers causing temporary blindness from approaching vehicles or vehicles travelling behind.
Under the NSW Road Rules illegal use of fog lights can result in a $110 fine and two demerit points. For further information please visit The NSW Centre for Road Safety http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/campaigns/roadrules.html
