Hi Everyone,
To kickoff this update period, I attended a workshop and consultation session at the Leeton Regional Skatepark facilitated by Totem Skateboarding, which is owned by former Leeton locals David and Nigel Cameron. The afternoon consisted of engaging young people in a group workshop which lead into a group exercise discussing and exploring options for the proposed extension. The event was very well attended. Community Development staff collated all of the feedback from the young people which was then presented to Totem Skateboarding to further develop a design concept.
It was a pleasure to once again attend the Leeton Show with my wife Julie and officially declare the Show open for 2018. I would like to acknowledge the effort that is put in by Leeton Show Society President Elizabeth Munn, Secretary Vanessa Jennings, the hardworking committee and everyone else involved in organising this wonderful event for Leeton. To have a committee that continues to ensure that our Show is successful as a major community event is a great testament to their hard work and commitment.
I would also like to acknowledge everyone involved in organising and participating in Leeton’s Relay for Life which raised vitally needed funds for treatment, prevention, research and support services for cancer patients. A substantial amount of money was raised. This event also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memories of loved ones lost to cancer and this was done beautifully with everyone participating in a “walk down memory lane”.
Along with fellow councillors, I attended a wonderful breakfast and presentation shared with some of Leeton's small businesses (close to 50 people in attendance) as part of NSW Small Business Month celebrations. It was an opportunity to bring people together to look at ways to enhance their customer service and retail activities.
To hear the comments that I did during and since the 2018
Leeton Chill and Grill event has been extremely positive.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally congratulate the Organising Committee, Council’s Events Officer Hannah Fitzsimon for the enormous effort that she put into making this year’s event a reality and the sponsors for their generous support. The transformation of a carpark into an event space that had such a great vibe, urban look and feel was so wonderful to see.
I was extremely proud to travel to Canberra with a busload of students from St Francis College to put a case forward for relocating children and families from Nauru. This is not about politics this is about injustice and human suffering and we are appealing for all sides of politics to work together.
Take care and best wishes until my November Update. Kind Regards, Mayor Paul Maytom
