The three years I have served on Council so far has certainly flown by and I have learnt a great deal in that time. Probably the best thing is that I have discovered our council is held in high esteem by other local councils, members of parliaments, government agencies but most importantly by our community.
The nine councillors all have strong ties to the community they represent and as a result there is a real connectivity between the community and the council. Most of the community know at least one councillor and there are plenty of opportunities for issues to be raised in a relaxed and informal setting. This means people have confidence in being heard. At Council meetings, every councillor has an opportunity to express their views and debate can sometimes be vigorous and robust. While there might not always be a unanimous decision, once a decision is reached, there is a united approach going forward. This cohesion is a real strength of our council.
Prior to going on council, I had little to no knowledge of issues such as water, solar farms and frost fans, just to name a few. These issues are complex and have required plenty of reading, conversing and reflecting. In no way would I suggest that I am expert in any of these areas, but I do now have a thorough knowledge of them and can identify the issues facing those affected.
I believe an important role of the Local Council is to hold government agencies, that service our shire, accountable. The current situation, for example, with the lack of on call doctors at our hospital, is, in my opinion, not acceptable. It is imperative that we continue to advocate for better services on behalf of our community.
Finally, I have also learnt that the staff who are employed at Leeton Shire Council are genuinely motivated to making our shire a better place. From the General Manager to the most junior clerk, what is best overall for Leeton Shire is the main objective and is foremost in all decision making. Aside from the indoor staff, I’ve seen outdoor Council staff planting new plants in roundabout flower beds on freezing mornings or working digging holes in summer heat, but they always have time to say g’day when you go past. The help, advice and inclusiveness offered to me by Council Staff has been tremendous.
I will continue to represent you, the local communities of Leeton Shire, in an open and transparent manner. We are very fortunate to live in such an inclusive Shire. Take care and best wishes!
Kind Regards, Cr Tony Reneker
