Australians are being urged to ‘take the pledge’ during National Road Safety Week to “Drive So Others Survive”.
National Road Safety week - an annual initiative from Government organisations highlighting the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it – is being held this year from15–22 May.
Each year, around 1,200 people are killed and another 44,000 are seriously injured on national roads.
Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under the age of 15 and the second-biggest killer of al Australians aged between 15-25.
These numbers are growing every year but are preventable if we choose to “Drive So Others Survive”.
In Leeton Shire alone there were 121 crashes with 134 casualties and four fatalities from 2017–2020.
Speed was involved in 19.8% of crashes, fatigue involved in 19% of cases and alcohol involved in 12.1% of cases.
As part of National Road Safety week, Council is hosting three events to educate road users on the following topics:
