It was laughter and friendship at the Leeton Multipurpose Community Centre on Sunday 25th March in celebration of Harmony Day.
Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into our community.
With more than 60 community members in attendance, the Leeton Harmony Day celebrations encompassed inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Leeton Shire Council Mayor and Chair of the Leeton Multicultural Group Paul Maytom said it was fantastic to see such a diverse group of community members come together in celebration of friendship.
“Harmony Day is all about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.”
“I’m also very proud of the fact that Leeton Shire is a Refugee Welcome Zone. In reaching this status Council has made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community.
Leeton Shire Library also celebrated Harmony Day with over 50 children, parents and carers with a Multicultural themed Storytime.
According to the Census (2016) there are over 30 different ancestral cultures in Leeton.
