Leeton Shire Council awarded two “Quick Response” funding applications at their August Ordinary Council meeting.
An application was received through Council’s Quick Response Youth Development Grant category to assist talented local Australian Rules footballer Coopa Steele to represent Leeton and NSW in the Under 15’s Australian Rules Schoolboys National Championships held in Perth in late July. Coopa was awarded $250 to put towards his travel expenses.
Mayor Cr Paul Maytom said that Coopa’s family has lived in the Leeton community for many years and been great contributors to many local sporting organisations.
“Coopa’s family has been heavily involved in many areas of the local sporting community from coaching right through to executive roles. Coopa’s achievement in being selected in this national team for his age group is not only testament to his hard work but a credit to his parents Kirsty and Brendan who have worked tirelessly to see him achieve this outstanding result.”
Council also awarded a $500 grant under Council’s Quick Response Grant category to the Leeton Golf Club. This funding will go towards organising costs for hosting the Leeton Veteran’s Week of Golf in October this year.
Mayor Cr Paul Maytom added that this event attracts a large number of competitors making use of accommodation and other local services.
“Over 100 players and their partners will converge on Leeton for this 4-day event which has been running for over 10 years now. The NSW Veterans Golfers Association has done studies that suggest a couple staying in our town for one week spends an average of $1,000. This is a significant injection into all areas of the Leeton visitor economy.”
Council’s Community Strengthening Grants Scheme has two rounds each financial year, opening in September (Round 1) and March (Round 2). Council will advertise when Round 1 will open in the coming weeks.
