At its February Ordinary Meeting, Leeton Shire Council resolved to contribute $15,000 to the “Inside Water” film project being led by Leeton raised actor, producer and writer Jake Speer.
Council will ask that the sponsorship be directed towards costs incurred while filming in Leeton.
There was spirited discussion as Councillors grappled with this unusual request in a fiscally tight environment. In the end, it was decided that the potential benefits of marketing the Shire widely - both nationally and internationally - warranted the investment.
Cr Michael Kidd said the Jake Speer is a Leeton local who has been loyal to the Shire. He considered sponsoring the film “too good of an opportunity to be missed by Council”.
“There are major benefits of staging a filming project like this in Leeton - it could put Leeton ‘on the map’ both nationally and internationally for the cost equivalent of three quarter page spreads in the Sydney Morning Herald.”
“The film being set in Leeton Shire will also foster creative development and skills in the Shire, with Jake offering to mentor a local intern in film making as part of Council’s sponsorship agreement. This is very exciting for our passionate arts and culture enthusiasts in Leeton Shire.”
Cr Tony Reneker noted that encouraging the film industry in Leeton is an action in Council’s Adopted Delivery Program.
The sponsorship benefits offered by Mr Speer include an “in association with Leeton Shire” credit at the beginning of the film and on the official poster and trailer. The Council logo will appear on all official communication material and Council will be recognised in local and national media coverage, including social media. A “making-of” documentary (close to one hour) with a strong focus on the Leeton community and artists as well as the official red carpet launch will be held in Leeton.
Nearly all councillors spoke in support of the project but some felt a lessor amount was more appropriate. The motion to support the full $15,000 sponsorship was won 5-4.
Mayor Cr Paul Maytom said the sponsorship will indirectly support the Leeton community.
“The cast and crew will be using Leeton not just for filming but as their home base whilst production is being undertaken. This means that local businesses will benefit from the increased visitor activity, with the cast and crew staying at local accommodation venues, eating at local restaurants and buying goods from local businesses.”
Filming of “Inside Water” will
commence in April 2018.
