Leeton Shire Council will be participating again in the Bush Bursary Program which provides medical students with valuable experience in a rural setting.
NSW Rural Doctors Network offers Bush Bursaries and Country Women’s Associations Scholarships annually to selected medical students in NSW and the ACT and the Council was invited to participate in the 2018 program.
Leeton Shire Council has committed $3000 funding for the placement of a Bush Bursary/Country Women’s Association scholarship medical student in the Shire.
Mayor Paul Maytom said the Council was delighted to continue to support the program.
“Council has continued to support this important program for many years now. Feedback from past bursary recipients affirmed that students find their placements useful in understanding specific issues relevant to rural and regional communities.”
“Students not from the country gain invaluable knowledge and familiarity with rural issues, often attracting them to think about rural medicine as a career choice."
Going forwards Council will be seeking more active support from the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network in regards to the medical aspects of the placement.
