Leeton Shire Council is actively reviewing its Financial Hardship Policy in light of the COVID-19 pandemic which is having a major impact on regional communities including the Leeton Shire.
Council’s Manager Finance Jackie Hawkins said that Council has in place existing hardship provisions for residential ratepayers facing financial difficulties, based on the need to ensure members of its community are treated fairly, consistently and with respect and compassion.
“Council officers are presently reviewing opportunities to clarify how the same policy applies to business ratepayers. It is expected the options for clarification will be presented to Council for consideration in April.
“Potential options for relief include no interest charges, a payment plan, a deferral period or all or any combination of this assistance to pay the outstanding 2019/20 rates and charges.”
Mrs Hawkins added that in order to apply for this assistance, residents can phone Council’s Rates Officer on (02) 6953 0911 who will then discuss the requirements of the application process with the applicant and provide an application form.
“Council considers applications for hardship on a case by case basis and requires applicants to complete an application form and provide supporting documentation to ensure the Financial Hardship Policy is applied fairly and consistently across the community.”
