Leeton Shire Council noted the progress of the establishment of the Country Universities Centre in Leeton.
At it’s 22 May Ordinary Meeting, Council confirmed its investment of $30,000 towards the capital costs of closing in the courtyard at the Leeton Major Dooley Library for the purpose of providing a Country Universities Centre for Leeton residents.
The full cost for the works is estimated at $130,000 with $100,000 coming from State and Federal grant funding awarded to the Western Riverina Country Universities Centre.
Leeton Shire Council Mayor Paul Maytom said that the Country Universities Centre, being a community driven, not-for-profit, supported learning initiative - received strong Council endorsement as it will make tertiary education more accessible to Leeton Shire residents and enable the region to ‘grow our own’ workforce.
“The facility will provide campus-level technology with extended opening hours from 7am to midnight, access to tutors and a network of fellow students that fosters peer support. I’m certain many Leeton Shire residents studying university courses remotely will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”
Erin O’Callaghan, A Centre Manager, has been appointed to oversee two sites in Leeton and Griffith. The Leeton Centre will open in late September 2019.
