Your Council

Leeton Shire Council was initially formed in 1921 under the name Willimbong Shire.  Changing names to Leeton Shire in 1946, Council's motto Preserving the Past, Enhancing the Future captures the rich history of the region.

Leeton Shire is situated in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) of the Riverina Region of southern New South Wales.  It is a major centre for the production of rice, citrus and wine grapes and a focal point for research, training and education in agricultural enterprise.

The township of Leeton was the first of the planned towns in the MIA and was designed by famous American architect, Walter Burley Griffin. Named after Charles Alfred Lee, Minister for Public Works during the development of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme, Leeton is surrounded by a number of villages such as Yanco, Whitton and Wamoon. With a population approaching 12,000 at the last census, the Shire covers an area of 1,132 sq km.

Council has 9 elected members serving 4 year terms. Council is responsible for planning, establishing, operating and maintaining community infrastructure within the Shire.

Council prides itself on its proactive approach to encouraging and maximising investment in the Shire, working with prospective investors and developers to create or expand industries beneficial to our region.
