The timing of preparing the beds and planting the new summer plantings is critical to ensuring the new plants establish successfully ahead of the coming hot weather. There are two plantings undertaken each year with the annual changeover periods being October and March.
Seasonal variances can impact the success and duration of some plantings and this year the flowers have endured much longer than usual.
Replacement flowers are required to be ordered six months in advance and are grown to a target planting date. It is important to get them established as soon as they arrive in Leeton or there is a risk the seedlings will fail.
The newly planted floral displays should be in full bloom within the next 4-6 weeks in time for important Remembrance Day celebrations and will persist through the Christmas period into late summer when they will then again be removed and replaced in readiness for Easter.
Manager Open Space and Recreation, Josh Clyne said “It may seem disappointing to see the beautiful winter flowers removed now but it will be even more disappointing if the summer blooms failed because Council left its planting run too late”.
