At its March Ordinary Council Meeting Leeton Shire Council resolved to place the newly produced DRAFT “Disability Inclusion Action Plan” on public exhibition from Thursday 23rd March until Wednesday 19th April.
Under the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 each Local Government Authority is required to develop a Disability Inclusion Action Plan to be in effect no later than 1 July 2017.
Council’s Manager Library, Culture and Community Penny Davies said that the plan must show strong evidence of engagement with the community, specifically with people with a disability.
In order to develop a meaningful DRAFT Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) three separate surveys were conducted including a community survey which yielded 41 responses, a staff survey 16 responses and business survey 3 responses.
One on one interviews were also conducted with the Leeton Early Learning Centre, Disability Advocacy Network and Kurrajong Waratah as well as opportunities to have direct conversation with community representatives during facilitated community consultation workshops held in November last year associated with the development of the Community Strategic Plan “Leeton on The Go”.
“The plan is also reflected in the Community Strategic Plan ‘Leeton On The Go’ which is a legislative requirement for NSW councils under state government legislation,”
“Guidelines were developed by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) to inform the plans and have been used in development of the draft plan for Leeton Shire Council.”
Mayor Cr Paul Maytom said that whilst there are no immediate financial implications for this plan, Council may determine to undertake strategies and actions outlined in the plan to establish universal access in facilities and to enhance engagement for people with a disability.
“These strategies and actions would need to be determined on a case by case basis and often would be achieved through securing grant monies for identified projects.”
Formal submissions should be addressed to the General Manager, Leeton Shire Council, 23-25 Chelmsford Place, LEETON NSW 2705 or via email firstname.lastname@example.org
